Swinburne University of Technology
Based in Melbourne, Swinburne was originally established as a technical college in 1908. University status was achieved in 1992, and Swinburne now offers a wide range of programs at its Melbourne campuses, at a major branch-campus at Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia, and online. In both education and research, Swinburne’s strengths lie predominantly in science, engineering, ICT, design, the social sciences, business and innovation. Consistently rated within the ‘top 500’ in all major international university ranking systems (and in the ‘top 100’ for Physics), the University has a proud reputation for teaching excellence. There is a strong emphasis on experiential and industry-engaged learning, and on high-quality online delivery, and the organisation’s reputation is reinforced, year after year, by the excellent feedback provided via national student and graduate surveys. Research is focussed in five areas: Future manufacturing: integrating materials and manufacturing technology with design, automation and ICTs Sustainable futures: combining engineering, social and environmental elements to address sustainability issues, inform debate and influence policy Digital frontiers: changing the way we work, communicate and socialise via advances in ICT, business innovation and design Personal and societal wellbeing: improving health, wellness and quality of life Inspirational science and technology: igniting community interest and stimulating next generation leaders.
Swinburne`s mission (and vision) is to be Australia`s leading university of science, technology and innovation by 2020. This intent is predicated on the University`s strengths across the physical, social, behavioural and health sciences, and in design, business and innovation. Central to the vision is a determination to remain a focussed, rather than a comprehensive, university. Over past decades, Swinburne has progressed to become one of the world`s leading universities. The emphasis is on high-quality, engaged teaching and research in science, technology and innovation teaching and research that makes a difference in the lives of individuals and contributes to national and international economic and social objectives. Swinburne is working to advance and build research quality and impact through partnerships with industry, other universities and research institutes – within Australia and internationally – to achieve outcomes that are directly relevant and applicable to industry and society. Quality is never confused with elitism: the University provides educational opportunities to capable students everywhere. Both as an early leader in international education and an early adopter of high quality online education, Swinburne is expanding the educational opportunities available to a new generation of learners from more than 120 different nations. To achieve its 2020 vision, Swinburne: o embraces a University-wide commitment to growth through excellence o engages students through quality programs, often available in different delivery modes to suit individual needs o produces outstanding research that is relevant, impactful and internationally-recognised o aims to be a partner of choice for industry, government, other universities and research institutes, and community agencies and groups.
