University of Rovira i Virgili

The Rovira i Virgili University (URV) was created in 1991 by the Catalan Parliament. Located in southern Catalonia, it has developed a multi-centre structure with 6 campus sites and is one of the leading universities in both Catalonia and Spain. This academic year (2013-14) the URV has 14,319 students and nearly 3,400 students are following lifelong learning courses. 29% of the postgraduate students are international students. In the previous academic year, 2,993 degrees were awarded and 165 theses were completed. The URV employs nearly a thousand academic staff and 637 administrative and service staff. Its total budget is 102.3 million. The URV`s scientific production is reflected in its 998 Web of Science publications (2013) and its presence in 7 ESI areas of excellence. The number of publications per permanent member of teaching staff is the fourth highest in Spain (2013) and it is the fifth Spanish public university in terms of overall research productivity (2012 ranking of Spanish public universities in terms of production and research productivity, by the University of Granada). The wide-ranging and well defined relationship between the university, business and society is one of the main reasons why the URV and its surroundings have been recognized as a Campus of International Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Education. As such, the URV provides the region with a knowledge structure that is internationally visible and that achieves international recognition.

The mission of the URV is to place knowledge at the service of society. This mission is undertaken in four main areas: Generating the maximum added value for people`s skills throughout their life. Making a significant contribution to the progress of knowledge and its transfer to society. Promoting the socio-economic transformation and progress of the region and society. Becoming a flexible and versatile organization, focused on innovation and at the service of its users. The vision of the URV is to become the university for the all-round education of individuals, where they learn to be, to do, to live together and to discover. Commitment: To construct the future by generating and transmitting knowledge, in order to contribute to personal development and the progress of society. Objectives: The objective of the URV is to achieve a high level of quality in the areas of study and teaching, university research and extension and assistance for members of the university community and its management. In order to achieve this, organizational and institutional quality must be attained by means of systems that are part of the University`s everyday life, which enable it to measure, assess, guarantee and improve quality. The specific areas of this general objective can be summarized in four basic points, which provide the structure for the URV quality system: To meet the demand for education. To provide teaching of acknowledged quality. To achieve verified scientific quality. To obtain effective and efficient organization.
