University of Salamanca
The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, is an intermediate-sized institution with more than 30,000 students and is very attractive in the sense that it is Spain`s second university hosting more students from outside its university district. The University of Salamanca is considered the alma mater of Latin-American universities because the first such institution founded on that continent took the statutes of this Spanish university as a reference. The University of Salamanca also has a rich historical-artistic tradition that has left its mark on the city and has paved the way for university activities that are recognized internationally. Currently the University of Salamanca has four Campuses: in the city of Salamanca itself, in vila, in Zamora and in Bejar. These host 16 Schools, 3 Higher Technical Colleges, 3 Technical Colleges, 3 affiliated Technical Colleges, the also affiliated European College of Aeronautics, and six University Colleges, which offer a total of 74 degree courses, 3 double degree courses, 69 Masters courses, and 93 degrees specially developed by the University of Salamanca. Additionally, the University is deeply involved in research via 12 research institutes, 10 technological centres and 6 cultural and specialized-studies centres.
Since its creation the University of Salamanca has had a profound Latin-American vocation, which means that its international relations are of special relevance in this context, where it has very active agreements with countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, among others. Likewise it is very active in projects in Europe, Asia and America. The University of Salamanca is considered to be The University of Spanish owing to its long tradition in teaching this language. This means that each year the University hosts thousands of foreign students, both in summer and along the academic year, in which courses are offered in Spanish language and culture. Scientific research at the University of Salamanca covers many diverse avenues of enquiry, the fields of the biosciences being of particular relevance thanks to the excellent relations the University has with other research centres and hospitals located in the city.
