Babes-Bolyai University
Babes-Bolyai University is in many ways – even according to some international criteria – the largest and most comprehensive higher education institution in Romania. Nearly 40000 students in bachelor, master and doctoral study programmes are enrolled in 21 faculties and 12 academic extensions distributed throughout Transylvania. Multiculturalism is one of the core pillars of UBB. We provide education along three lines of study (Romanian, Hungarian, German) and also offer programmes and courses in other languages like English and French. The above three lines of study are autonomous, are organized at each level (department, faculty, university) and represented at all levels. UBB hosts Italian, Polish, Chinese, Russian, English, Austrian, Portuguese, Korean and other cultural centres, libraries and institutes. Another dimension of the UBB is the multiconfessionalism, in keeping with Transylvanian realities. Within UBB coexist the Faculties of Orthodox Theology, of Greek Catholic Theology, of Protestant Theology and of Roman Catholic Theology along with the `Dr. Moshe Carmilly` Institute for Hebrew and Jewish History.
UBB is a comprehensive university of advanced research and education. In following the triad of the modern university – namely education, research and services for the community, the general mission of the university consists in generating and transferring knowledge. Specifically, the mission consists of the following: Insures the creation of knowledge through intensive research; Insures the training of students and of researchers, responsible and active citizens, by promoting teaching and research in accordance to the requirements of the values and knowledge-based society and also through initial training, continuous education and integration in the universal values circuit; Insures a framework for multicultural, multilinguistic and interconfessional interferences and carries out the training under non-discriminatory circumstances, in Romanian, Hungarian and German; Contributes to local, regional and national development from a social, economic, cultural, politic point of view, through an involvement according to the community’s needs (UBB`s Charter 2012).
