University of the Ryukyus
The University of the Ryukyus is located in Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, and consists of seven faculties and eight graduate schools.
Okinawa is blessed with rich nature in a subtropical climate, and many tourists from mainland Japan and overseas visit our islands. Okinawa, which used to be the Ryukyu Kingdom, had trade with China, Korea, and Southeast Asian countries, and its culture was greatly influenced by those countries. Taking advantage of its historical background and geographical characteristics, the University of the Ryukyus emphasizes education and research rooted in regional characteristics, including: 1. Coral reef production and biological resources; 2. Tropical agriculture and biotechnology; 3. Advanced medical techniques for subtropical infectious diseases; 4. Information technology using our tropical environment, energy functionality, and geographic location; 5. Okinawan history, culture, people, language, and cross-cultural studies; and 6. Comprehensive research on the Asian Pacific region.
