Top-level research, excellence in teaching and studies, internationality and interdisciplinary collaboration have stood for the University of Konstanz since its foundation as a Reform University in 1966. This clear orientation soon led to a unique profile that not only stands out through its high quality but also through innovation, creativity and a commitment to enjoying research. The consistent expansion of its strengths and innovative concepts and ideas have contributed significantly to the University of Konstanz succeeding in the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments to promote top-level research at German universities in October 2007 with its Institutional Strategy ‘Model Konstanz towards a culture of creativity’. The University of Konstanz is a campus university of medium size. Thirteen departments operate in three faculties: Sciences, Humanities as well as Politics, Law, Economics.
Founded in the mid 1960s on the basis of forward-looking reform idea, the University of Konstanz has continued to further develop its specific model of a small, but strongly research-oriented, purposeful, innovative and flexible institution, with the obejctive of acquiring and imparting new knowledge. The University of Konstanz aims to: – provide an environment for scientists to conduct top-level research – increase the university’s international competitiveness and visibility and to collaborate with research oriented universities in recruiting outstanding researchers and students worldwide in the interest of dynamic, high quality scientific exchange – increase the proportion of women gaining a doctorate, a habilitation, young research group leaders as well as professorships – develop and implement research-related study programmes and courses, graduate schools, and junior research groups in which young scholars and scientists conduct independent research – enhance the collaboration between the 13 departments in three faculties and the various disciplines and thus define new areas of research – promote young scientists and offer them a creativity-stimulating environment for their research and to create a strong network of scientific excellence that opens up innovative paths to leading professional positions
