Indian School of Mines
Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad was established in 1926 for catering to the manpower needs of coal and mineral industries. The Institute is directly under financial and administrative control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India since 1996. The academic profile of the Institute changed over the time to keep abreast with the technological challenges and societal aspirations. The Institute has been in service of the nation contributing immensely in nation building for last 88 years contributing immensely towards nation building. The first phase of expansion of the ISM began in 1950-51, the Silver Jubilee year, when annual admissions increased from 20 in 1926 to 60. In 1957 new disciplines – Applied Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering were added raising the intake to 100. In due recognition of its vital role in the service of mineral exploration and mining sectors towards National economy ISM was granted autonomy as a deemed to be university in 1967 by the Government of India. During 1975-2000 second phase of expansion followed in the addition of the discipline of Mining Machinery Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics & Computing, Physics and Chemistry. The third phase of expansion saw addition of the courses in B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
To educate and train manpower in various disciplines of engineering & technology, management, applied sciences and applied arts at the graduate, postgraduate and research levels, To foster the creation of new and relevant technologies in the areas of its core competency and to transfer them to industry for effective utilization, To participate directly in the planning and solving of engineering and managerial problems of relevance to Indian industry and to society at large, To develop and conduct continuing education programmes for practicing engineers and managers, To develop strong collaborative and Copperative links with private and public sector industries and government user departments, To develop comprehensive and intimate interaction with premier academic and research institutions within the country and abroad for mutual benefit, To develop programmes for faculty growth and development, To anticipate the technological needs of the Nation and to plan and prepare to cater to them, To interact with the community/society at large with a view to inculcate in them a feel for scientific and technological thought and endeavour, and To develop the region in which the Institute is located through community development programmes including training and education.
