The University of Iceland is a progressive educational and scientific institution, renowned in the global scientific community for its research. The University of Iceland is an international research university with strong obligations to Icelandic society, culture and language. The University of Iceland has served the Icelandic community for more than 100 years and has been an active participant in the transformation of Icelandic society during this time. The University serves the Icelandic community best by being both a dynamic international research university and a leading Icelandic educational institution. In 2006 the University of Iceland set itself the ambitious long-term goal of becoming one of the leading universities in the world and specified numerous intermediate goals for this process. A second Strategic Plan in 2011 followed along the same lines.The University has comprehensively evaluated the implementation of the Strategic Plans, and ascertained that most of the intermediate goals have been achieved. Because of the current economic conditions in Iceland, the University focuses on harmonizing efforts and strengthening collaboration in teaching and research.
