University of Turku

The University of Turku is an international research university and an active academic community of more than 25,000 students and employees. It was founded as the first Finnish-language university in the country in 1920. The university campus is located in the historical city centre of Turku – close to the unique nature and archipelago of Southwest Finland. As one of the leading universities in Finland, the University of Turku offers study and research opportunities in seven faculties and twelve special units – with expertise ranging from humanities, economics and social sciences to medicine and science. The University of Turku has close co-operation in research and education with a number of universities and higher education institutions around the world. It is a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of prestigious universities in Europe. Over 1,600 international students from over 95 countries study annually at the University of Turku. The University of Turku is an internationally competitive university, the operation of which is based on high-quality multidisciplinary research. The University promotes free research and academic education and provides higher education based on research. The University`s aim and ambition is to provide students with innovative problem solving skills and a high-standard, multidisciplinary education. Molecular biosciences form the widest area of strength in research. Other strategic areas of strength are cardiovascular and metabolic research, ecological interactions and ecological genetics research, learning and education research, future studies and research on institutional design and social mechanisms. A strong focus is placed on making research careers attractive and predictable. To meet the needs of the society, public and private sectors, the University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) aims to train highly qualified experts with the skills required for both professional career in research and other positions of expertise. It provides systematic and high quality doctoral training on academic topics as well as on transferable skills and career planning. Each Doctoral Candidate has a personal supervisor and the progress of the doctoral dissertation is followed regularly. The University of Turku also hosts two multidisciplinary research collegia: Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) and Turku Collegium for Science and Medicine (TCSM). Their aim is to to promote cutting-edge research and also the research careers of young scholars. The University of Turku takes an active role in the society and in Copperation with other higher education institutions, public sector research institutions and companies in the region and around the world.
