University of Crete

The University of Crete is a young and dynamic educational institution, sited in a region rich in ancient and modern Mediterranean cultures. Established in 1973, the University accepted its first students in 1977-8. Currently around 14000 students study here through the Faculties of Philosophy, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences & Technology, and Medicine, taught by an outward looking academic staff committed to excellence in research and teaching. Research activity benefits from close collaboration with the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), the Institute of Marine Biology & Genetics, and the University Hospital, and is reflected in collaborations with leading institutions worldwide.

The Mission of the University is to provide a stimulating environment that promotes education by teaching and research. We strive for excellence in teaching, research and community partnerships and aim to: – provide a secure and open teaching and learning environment for our students; – take a leading role in research and the resulting innovations; – promote the cultural, social and economic development of the region, and – develop and strengthen collaborations with other academic institutions within Greece, Europe and worldwide.
