The University de Bordeaux (France) has a long-lasting university tradition dating back to 1441. It was was newly established on the 1st of January 2014, following the merger of three universities: University Bordeaux 1, University Bordeaux Segalen and University Bordeaux Montesquieu. This merger is a result of the reorganization of higher education and research institutions in France. It represents over two decades of groundwork for inter-university cooperation, strengthened over time by operational projects that have been jointly designed and managed. Ranked among the top universities in France for the quality of its academic courses and research, it is a multi-disciplinary, research-focused, international institution. The University of Bordeaux is the third largest university in France (based on the number of its students), with more than 50, 000 students, including almost 2, 000 PhD students and 6, 000 foreign students. It employs around 5, 600 staff members, of which nearly 3, 000 are academic and research staff.

This merger is a result of the reorganization of higher education and research institutions in France. The University of Bordeaux offers a total of 245 curricula that lead to national degrees. These curricula are organized around four major scientific fields: – Science and technology – Law, political science, economy, management – Life and health science – Social and human science The University of Bordeaux promotes research-based teaching thanks to active collaboration between the study programs and the research projects carried out in the University`s numerous research centers. Research is organized around 3 departments: Science and Technology, Life and Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. These departments group together 80 research laboratories that are under joint supervision with national research organizations. Research activities go beyond strict disciplinary boundaries and are involved in numerous national, European and international research programs. Top-level research is conducted in all scientific fields and certain activities have been rewarded with an excellence label, thus acknowledging high performance in collaborative, interdisciplinary and international projects. These projects cover environmental sciences, neurosciences, advanced materials, archaeology, optics and lasers, computer sciences, translational research and advanced imaging, public health and cardiology.
