Founded as an engineering college in 1918, Tallinn University of Technology acquired university status in 1936. Tallinn Tech is one of the largest public universities in Estonia, providing an interdisciplinary higher education and technological advancement. Tallinn Tech, as the only university of technology in Estonia, is committed to high level research, significant on the global and national scale, implementable in teaching and promotion of innovation. Tallinn Tech has over 14 500 students and personnel of over 2000(incl. affiliated institutions.) The University offers engineering and economics diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programs. The University aims at enhancing its contribution to Estonia’s science policy, based on key international trends and local industry needs and social and economic changes in the society. Tallinn Tech is organized into 8 faculties, 33 departments and 113 chairs, 9 faculty research centers, and 10 affiliated institutions. Research and development activities are arranged through departments, research centers and R&D institutions: Institute of Geology, Institute of Cybernetics, Institute of Marine Systems, Estonian Institute of Energy Research. Languages of instruction are Estonian and English; selected programs and general subjects are available in Russian. As from academic year 2012/13, TUT offers 18 Master and 3 Bachelor programs in English. Currently there are ~1000 international students, half of them exchange students.

The mission of Tallinn Tech is to develop the economy and industry of Estonia and the Baltic Sea region through top graduates, scientific achievements, knowledge services, innovative applications and Copperation projects. The University establishes a synergy between technological, natural, exact, health and social sciences, thus contributing to the development of society. Tallinn Tech is the most international university as well the most international organization in Estonia. Besides of the large number of international students (new student intake was ~700 in 2012), Tallinn Tech will provide study programs and promotes its R&D activities in Helsinki, Silicon Valley and Shanghai. Tallinn Tech has established its office in Silicon Valley with the aim to develop education in business and innovation. In addition, TUT has developed an innovation platform Mektory to foster the study possibilities for Master and PhD students in Business Models, Mobile & Media Services and Design. To develop education and research of high international quality, Tallinn Tech is focusing on the Copperation with enterprises, fast-growing companies and international corporations, together with the leading research universities in Nordic countries, in China and in U.S. Besides Skype`s development office, there are ca 200 companies operating in Tallinn Tech`s campus, which, together with the Tallinn Science Park Tehnopol, the universities innovation services and foreign representations constitute for a Tallinn Tech`s ecosystem.
