• His family, who hails from Sicily, was in the construction and real estate business, which he expanded and took into other sectors.
• In 1999, after buying several papers, he built media group Caltagirone Editore, Italy’s third largest newspaper publisher.
• The bulk of his wealth is now stakes in two publicly traded firms: insurance company Assicurazioni Generali and cement giant Cementir.
