Chulalongkorn University
Chulalongkorn University, the oldest and most prestigious university in Thailand, was founded in its present form in 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). It was named after his father, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who laid the foundations for modern education in Thailand. In keeping with the shared vision of both kings, it has maintained the reputation for academic excellence and has been the pillar of the kingdom ever since. Today, it consists of 19 Faculties and 1 Office, 2 teaching institutes, 3 colleges and 10 institutes with a total enrollment of more than 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It has presented honorary degrees to a number of international dignitaries and heads of state including former US Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton, the late Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, former South African President Nelson R. Mandela and H.M. King Don Juan Carlos de Bourbon of Spain. In QS World University Rankings 2011-2012, it has made a leap up from the 180th to 171st global position (number one in Thailand), it has been ranked 68th for Social Science, 104th for Technology, 78th for Life Science & Biomedicine and 69th for Arts and Humanities.
Chulalongkorn University aims to become a world class national university through integrating all our resources and human capital to respond to global, regional and national problems and playing a lead role in solving global issues. These will be achieved through researches in fields such as energy, global warming, food and water, emerging health risks, ageing society, and human security. Utilizing our human resources, be it current students and past alumni, we aim to develop innovative projects, and collaborate with industries and their respective experts to better understand and solve the situation at hand. We also continually expand our academic network through increase collaborations with other renowned universities; perfect our campus facilities and environment; and increase international student population to encourage more intercultural exchange within the student body. As an educational institution, we also aim to produce quality global citizens who are equipped with ethics and the attitude of life-long learning. They must be able to communicate efficiently in foreign languages, possess basic knowledge in science and technology, and are computer literate. We are determined to graduate not just the best qualified but persons of integrity under the credo, The Pride of Chula is in Serving the Public. Through producing competent human resource, Chulalongkorn University hopes to be able to sustain Thailands global competitiveness as a nation.
