Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) is located in Sakai which has a long tradition of foreign trade and cultural exchanges. With a history of over 130 years, OPU merged with two public universities to become one of the largest comprehensive public university corporations in Japan comprising 7 undergraduate and graduate schools. With a total of 8,500 undergraduate and graduate students and 745 faculty members, OPU is one of the leading centers of academic excellence and cutting-edge research. In ratio to the number of faculty members, OPU tops the nation in number of research proposals accepted by the highly competitive JST Incubation program.

Introduction Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) is located in Sakai, Osaka near the famous Nintoku Tumulus. As the gateway to the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto, Sakai has a long tradition of creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation. Established over 130 years ago, OPU comprises the Schools of Engineering, Science, and Life and Environmental Science, Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Nursing and Comprehensive Rehabilitation, each with its own graduate school. As a leading center of academic excellence and cutting-edge research, OPU is particularly dedicated to the development of environmentally-friendly materials science and engineering. Research & Innovation OPU`s School of Engineering ranks high among university citation indexes per discipline, placing 3rd in Japan in Computer Science, 6th in Material Science and 9th in Engineering. Particularly outstanding is the Department of Aerospace Engineering. A high number of proposals or seeds in the highly competitive Japan Science and Technology (JST) Innovative Research Incubation Program have also been accepted with OPU placing 5th in national rankings. However, in ratio to the number of faculty members, OPU tops the nation in proposals accepted. Another focal point is the high number of industry-academia collaborative projects, placing 13th in national rankings. OPU is dedicated to international collaborations through Academic Partnership Agreements with over 80 universities and institutions around the world as well as a double-degree system with selected partner institutions.
