Gianluigi Aponte

Gianluigi Aponte is an Italian billionaire businessman, and the founder, owner and chairman of Mediterranean Shipping Company, the second-largest container shipping line in the world after Maersk.

A captain by training, Gianluigi Aponte entered the shipping industry in 1970 together with his wife Rafaela.
Their company MSC has become the second-largest container shipping line in the world for vessel capacity, just behind global leader AP Møller Maersk.
In 2014, Gianluigi retired as CEO and became Group Chairman while Rafaela is still in charge of the ships’ interior design.
Their son Diego Aponte took over as CEO while daughter Alexa Aponte Vago is MSC’s CFO.
MSC also operates in industries such as holiday cruises (MSC Cruises), inland logistics (Medlog) and port operations (Terminal Investment Limited).
