Yokohama National University
Yokohama National University (YNU) was established in 1949. Today, YNU comprises four Undergraduate Colleges (Education and Human Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, and Engineering Science) and five Graduate Schools (Education, Social Sciences, Engineering, Environment and Information Sciences, and Urban Innovation). It has developed into a university with more than 1,000 faculty and administrative staff and 10,000 students. YNU is located in the historically international City of Yokohama, where is Japan’s second largest city and located less than half an hour south of Tokyo by train. YNU has been highly dedicated to a global perspective and has concluded International Exchange Agreements with 130 universities in 38 countries and region. 934 international students from 65 countries and region are currently enrolled at YNU.
Since its foundation, YNU has been committed to the spirit of solving actual, real-world problems by putting theory into practice, encouraging new endeavors, widely opening its doors to society, and fostering exchange with other nations. In testament to this commitment, YNU will make every effort to establish a strong footing in academic research and education in the world of the 21st Century by upholding four principles: “Be Active`, `Be Innovative`, `Be Open` and `Be Global`. We promote the cultivation of personnel who can be active on the global stage and internationally open education and research activities, and are always embracing new challenges. These efforts include a short-term student exchange program (sending YNU students overseas and hosting foreign students for periods of up to three months). Many of the international students who experienced real-life Japan through activities in this program remark that they were touched by people`s kindness, came to like Japan, and want to return to Japan for longer study. Similarly, the YNU students who were sent overseas developed broader perspectives from collaborative works with local students and gained interest in their host countries, and some are now advancing to subsequent steps. In research and education, YNU is implementing joint projects with overseas universities and research institutions in such fields as safety and security including disaster prevention and disaster reconstruction, social and natural environmental problems, medi cal information communication technology, civil engineering and construction, economic growth strategies and response to regional issues. These are achieving many results. With the above objectives in mind, YNU will press forward with a unique university reform by building a highly transparent organization and administrative system, and by running the continuous cycles of planning – implementation – evaluation.
