Founded in 1787, the University of Pittsburgh is one of the world?s most distinguished comprehensive research universities and is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). The University is among the nation’s top ten American higher education institutions in terms of federal funding, as reported by the National Science Foundation. It also ranks among the top five universities nationally in annual research support awarded by the National Institutes of Health. Pitt enrolls more than 35,000 students on its campus in Pittsburgh and four regional campuses in Western Pennsylvania. The University employs more than 5,200 faculty, 7,000 staff, and 800 research and postdoctoral associates. The University’s annual operating budget is more than $1.8 billion.
