Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is an academic institution of national importance created by an Act of Parliament. It is governed by a Board of Governors constituted by the Government of India. IIT Kanpur is located on a 1050 acres campus, in the city of Kanpur, within the State of Uttar Pradesh which is in the northern part of India. Most of the faculty, staff and students of IIT Kanpur reside inside the campus. The Institution has fourteen academic departments in the following four categories: Engineering, Sciences, Management and Humanities, Life Sciences. In addition, it has five Inter-disciplinary programs: Design, Environmental Engineering and Management, Laser Technology, Materials Science Programme, and Nuclear Engineering and Technology.
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is engaged in cutting edge research and technology development. It imparts education to more than five thousand students to make them competent and motivated engineers, managers, scientists and humanists. The Institute not only celebrates freedom of thought, cultivates vision and encourages growth, but also inculcates human values and concern for the environment and the society. While the Institute strives to continue to hold top ranking for undergraduate education in India, simultaneously it is making efforts to reach the status of a tier 1 research university on the world stage. In order to establish IIT Kanpur as a globally renowned institution, the Institute has launched a special drive to enhance its faculty strength, fortify the research engineer/scientists cadre, and augment infrastructure significantly within the next few years. IIT Kanpur aims for a healthy growth in the number of its PhD students, faculty, publications, patents, and the amount of sponsored research funding and earnings from intellectual property. Steps are being taken to have a deeper and closed collaboration with domestic as well as multinational industries. While the campus community provides a good mix of faculty and students from all corners of India, efforts are being made to attract students and researchers from across the world. The Institute is conscious that it needs to work for providing increased gender diversity and make the campus sensitive to the needs of the physically challenged persons. Alumni of IIT Kanpur play a useful role in the growth of the institute and the institute would like to further enhance their engagement.
