The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. In 2012, it has been awarded the status of an excellence university following its success in a nationwide competition initiated by the German federal and state governments to promote top-level research and enhance quality education. As a research-oriented multi-faculty institution, the University of Cologne covers a broad spectrum of disciplines and has developed internationally outstanding research profile areas. It has six faculties: management, economics and social sciences, law, medicine, arts and humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, as well as human sciences. The University of Cologne has several high-profile graduate schools to support young researchers and fosters research focus areas including research into aging at the Cologne Cluster on Excellence in Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases (CECAD) and into plant sciences at the Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS). The University of Cologne is located in the Rhineland a mega-urban region in the heart of Europe.
