The University of Coimbra is the oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world. Its history goes back to century that followed the establishment of Portugal itself, as it was founded in 1290 by the decree Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis, issued by King Dinis. Aware of its 722 years of historic responsability, the University of Coimbra is a model in permanent updating and adjustment to the country’s history.
