University of Basrah

University of Basrah, situated to the far south of Iraq, had been established in 1964 with 4 colleges (Arts, Sciences, Engineering and Law). At that time it was affiliated to the University of Baghdad and became a separate entity in 1967. The University has celebrated its golden Jubilee two years ago. It has, now, 20 colleges and a number of research centers (such as Marine Sciences Centre, Date-Palm Research Center, Center of Polymers, Center for Arabian Gulf Studies, and others). These are distributed in 3 main campuses within the city. The first campus at the west of the center of Basrah city at Bab- Al-Zubair. It encompasses colleges of (Arts, Fine Arts, Law, Administration and Economics, Education for Women, and a number of research centers and the Central Library). The second campus is situated to the north of the city, at Hartha (Garmat Ali), and contains colleges of (Engineering, Sciences, Education for Physical Sciences, Education for Humanities, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Pharmacy, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Marine Sciences, and a number of research centers). The third campus lies to the east of the city at Al-Bradeiae, and involves colleges of health sciences (Basrah College of Medicine, Al-Zahraa College of Medicine, College of Dentistry) and College of Nursing at Basrah General Hospital, in addition to College of Education at Qurna, around 80 Km to the north of Basrah. The University is managed by a council of 29 members; the Chancellor (currently, Professor Sajed Saad Hassan), two vice-chancellors, Deans of the 20 colleges, representatives of faculty staff and research centers, Head of the Department of quality and academic performance and the rapporteur of the council. The Chancellery office is situated on Shat Al-Arab waterway near the Central Bank. University of Basrah has, at the present time, more than 2818 faculty members, out of them 304 full professors. The total number of undergraduate students is 38101. Higher studies are available in most of the University colleges, and, so far, 139 PhD degrees and 399 Master degrees, in different disciplines, had been awarded. Currently, the University is issuing 22 scientific journals in various specialties, and has cultural relationship with a number of universities in different countries such as USA (Arkansas and Houston), Iran (Esfahan, Shaheed Jumran, Tabriz), and others.

The University of Basrah seeks to be one of the leading Iraqi universities at national, regional and international levels, and to be distinguished by its originality and sobriety in the field of education, scientific research and community services, which could lead to sustainable human development in the region. The University of Basrah is also working to prepare an academic environment with distinct higher education standards in order to be an integral part of the labor market and its requirements. This will be achieved through graduating students of high quality with scientific and ethical skills, and through conducting original research that serve strategic plans in the region to achieve excellence and pre-eminence. The University also provides consultations to the local community to help in solving its problems, and promote the capacity-building of its institutions. It also tries to invest human resources and new technologies to materialize the concept of productive university, and to improve the relationship with academic counterparts in the world at large.
