Macquarie University

Macquarie is a university of service and engagement serving to engage our students and staff through transformative learning and life experiences, and serving to engage the world through discovery, dissemination of knowledge and ideas, innovations and deep partnerships. Located in the heart of Australia`s largest high-technology precinct 15 kilometres from the centre of Sydney, Macquarie benefits from an environment of outstanding research and innovation, as well as learning and teaching opportunities with some of the worlds leading organisations. Macquarie recently received 5 QS Stars in the areas of teaching, employability, research, internationalisation, facilities, innovation, access and specialist subjects. Macquarie is one of only five Australian universities to receive five stars in all categories. Additionally, 85 per cent of Macquarie`s research activity is regarded by the Australian Government as being of world standard or higher. Macquarie is also known for its distinctive undergraduate curriculum which incorporates national and international community engagement opportunities for all students, helping to build their communication, problem-solving and leadership skills. Macquarie enrols around 38,000 students annually across four faculties and employs more than 2000 staff. It is a popular destination for international students, but also has one of the most generous outbound programs in Australia, supporting more than 600 students on overseas exchange annually.

Because they all use the same cliches about `creating` and `disseminating` knowledge and `engaging with their community`, university mission statements sound depressingly alike. Macquarie University has been transformed over the past six years, so we prefer to simply tell you what our goal is and how we plan to achieve it. By 2014 the University`s 50th anniversary our goal is for Macquarie to be among the top 200 universities in the world. To reach our goal we are investing heavily in research, learning and teaching, new facilities and in developing mutually beneficial relationships with industry. This seems to be paying off. According to the Australian Government, 80 per cent of Macquarie`s research areas are world standard or better. Macquarie has climbed up the Academic Rankings of World Universities, improving our position every year from 2006 to 2011. We are also rejuvenating our learning and teaching efforts. We introduced a new curriculum for undergraduates in 2010 which has begun to incorporate national and international community engagement opportunities for all of our students, and in 2012 implemented a new postgraduate curriculum. In early 2011, we opened a $98 million state-of-the-art library, teaching spaces are being renovated and student facilities are being redesigned and expanded. We are also developing stronger relationships with industry, alumni, donors and other supporters who want to see Macquarie continue to flourish.
