Keio University

Keio University is a private comprehensive education institution mainly located on campuses in the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan area. It was founded in 1858 by Yukichi Fukuzawa, a highly respected educator and intellectual, and is Japan`s first modern institution of higher learning. Over the last century and a half it has established itself as one of the country`s leading universities through its continued commitment to excellence in its education, research and medicine. Today, it consists of 10 undergraduate faculties, 14 graduate schools and over 20 research centers; and approximately 35,000 students – including 1,200 international students – and 3,000 faculty members.

While further advancing the quality of its education, research and medicine, Keio University has three main goals: to provide leadership to society, to engage in world-class research, and to further internationalize the university. Keio has long pursued excellence in its education and nurtured individuals with the ability to lead in all fields of society. We continue this tradition by cultivating an ability to think independently: to accurately grasp new situations and decide the right course of action. This is required in today`s drastically changing society and is encouraged by promoting the spirit of jitsugaku, or science, of the university’s founder, Yukichi Fukuzawa. For Fukuzawa, jitsugaku meant finding solutions to problems through a humble study of truth based on empirical science. Keio aims to nurture individuals who can think for themselves through an education grounded in this spirit of science. Many graduates have in this way gone on to distinguished careers in fields such as politics – Keio alumni include three former Prime Ministers of Japan – business, sciences, and the arts. Through the excellence of its education, the university aims to continue to nurture individuals who can go on to assume positions of leadership in society. The above goals feed into the ultimate purpose of Keio University: to help solve problems affecting Japan and the world, increase the sustainability of humankind, and improve its welfare.
