JNU believes in education being the catalyst for social change and betterment of human life and planetary existence. It strives to create global citizens with social and environmental consciousness scholars who would contribute to making the world a better place, who would work for equality, justice, and sustainable development while exploring the frontiers of knowledge and pursuing their individual dreams. To this end, it has created a democratic space where all stakeholders participate in decision-making, where students and staff work together to ensure that subsidised high quality education is available in a supportive environment, that all scholars understand the nature of their privilege and equip themselves to leave their stamp on the world. A trend-setter in affirmative action, the university has always worked in frontier areas of research, in expanding and blurring boundaries between disciplines, in creating scientists with a profound understanding of social processes and an appreciation for fine arts and literature,in all pursuits of the human mind, while creating scholars in Humanities and Social Sciences with a scientific temper, who would be able to harness technology in their attempts to understand human behaviour and social structure and create an equitable world.
